Santa Fe

December 7, 2015 by gokimdo

Before visiting New Mexico, my only associations with the state were hot air balloons and southwestern art. (Oh, and also a song from an old Disney movie called Newsies.) A weekend trip with Katie and Tamara showed me there’s a lot more to know and love about New Mexico…starting with alpacas! With Santa Fe as our destination, we flew into Albuquerque to drive up north via the Turquoise Trail which lies east of the Sandia Mountains. Starting at Tijeras, our first stop was at Hollywick Farms […]

Cartagena

November 9, 2015 by gokimdo

Hard to believe it’s “winter” in Cartagena in November: flowers are in full bloom, temperatures are nearly 90°F and humidity is over 70%! I nearly forgot about the sweltering heat while wandering down charming streets and getting caught up in the beautiful brightly colored buildings. The colonial architecture instantly endeared me to this coastal city. Taking photos with @omgitsrachlol had us both cracking up! In addition to our hilarious photo shoots, my favorite activity in Cartagena was strolling atop the old city walls. Look for […]

Salento

November 4, 2015 by gokimdo

Regardless of where I am in the world, sipping a hot cup of coffee is my daily highlight. So when in Colombia, I could think of no place better to visit than the coffee region known as Eje Cafetero. While in Bógota, I saw a sign outside of Starbucks in Chapinero that read: Orgullosamente servimos café colombiano en más de 23.000 tiendas en 66 países (Proudly we serve Colombia coffee in 23,000 stores in 66 countries) Until I knew the […]

Caye Caulker

August 4, 2015 by gokimdo

Unlike the paved roads in San Pedro, the small island of Caye Caulker has packed sand roads traversed only by pedestrians, cyclists and golf carts. It’s known for tranquility and boasts strong Rastafarian vibe. (Hair braiding, anyone?) Overall, I thought it was quite charming. I loved having the option to swim in Caye Caulker…in waters that are home to seahorses! The cool, lapping waves near The Split were perfect for bathing as well as prime for enjoying the sunrise and sunset. I did, however, […]

Belize City

July 31, 2015 by gokimdo

I always mentally categorized Belize with Mexican beach resorts like Cancun or Puerto Vallarta – accessible, tropical vacation spots that cater to American tourists. Belize hadn’t ever made it near the top of my travel list…until I found myself looking at my AAdvantage account, wondering how I could most creatively spend my miles and spotting a deal for Belize. And just like that, I was scheduled to arrive at BZE 37 days later. As I began to read up and orient myself to this […]

Half Moon Bay

June 16, 2013 by gokimdo

My friend, Frances, had the great idea to go to Pillar Point Harbor and pick up live crabs for lunch. We ordered two huge Dungeness crabs for roughly $20 and then took them over to Princeton Seafood Company where they cooked and cleaned them for only a few bucks. While we waited 25 minutes for our crabs to be prepared, we enjoyed delicious clam chowder in a bread bowl. If you go to Half Moon Bay between November and June, definitely treat […]

Miraflores

May 3, 2013 by gokimdo

Miraflores District is an upscale neighborhood in Lima. If you get a chance to visit, treat yourself to a stroll on the cliffs overlooking the South Pacific coastline. Start at the attractive Larcomar mall complex and work your way north toward Parque del Amor. From there, you can take Malecón back to the heart of the district. Parque Kennedy is at the heart of Miraflores. The park bustles with activity from morning ’til night, especially on holidays like Día del Trabajo (Labor Day) on May 1st. […]

Montreal

October 3, 2010 by gokimdo

Montreal is a fabulous city, and fall is a great time to visit. Over my long weekend, I stood in awe of Notre-Dame Basilica; enjoyed sweet maple treats in Old Montreal; snacked on Timbits from the popular Canadian chain, Tim Hortons; perused locally made items in the boutiques inside of Marché Bonsecours; rode a bike to see the fountains, flowers, falling leaves and Chinese sculptures in Montreal Botanical Garden; rode the Longueuil Ferry to St Helene Island; enjoyed the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts; and attended live shows from the international […]

Madrid

September 3, 2009 by gokimdo

During my time in Madrid, I lived in Atocha. Everyday leaving my house, I would walk past the modern art museum, Museo Reina Sofia. I went more than once to visit Picasso’s famous work, Guernica. On my way to and from Estudio Sampere—my Spanish language school—I walked through Retiro, my favorite park. I found any and every reason to walk through Plaza Mayor. It’s buzzing with activity! It’s the heartbeat of the city. Right off of Plaza Mayor is the Mercado de […]
